Proparoxytone. But perhaps the χαῖον is involved, that is, the bucolic staff, and the future ἐρύσω. It will therefore be in two ways, as is clear from Alcman at the beginning of the second of the partheneion songs. For he says: ‘you were not a rustic man nor boorish nor among the wise, nor Thessalian by race, nor Ἐρυσιχαῖος nor shepherd.’ For if it must be joined with ‘Thessalian by race’, it is an ethnic adjective and should be circumflexed on the penult; but if someone should join it with ‘nor shepherd’, saying ‘nor shepherd, that is, ἐρυσίχαιος’, it is evident that it will be proparoxytone and denotes the cowherd or the goatherd, to which ‘shepherd’ will be suitably added as an apposition.
Words in -αιος of more than three syllables are circumflexed on the penult, unless there is some distinction or it is a compound: Ἀθηναῖος, Εἰρηναῖος, ἀρουραῖος, ἀγοραῖος, Ἀμυκλαῖος, κορυφαῖος, Δερκεταῖος, Ἀριδαῖος, Ἱμεραῖος, ἡμεραῖος, ταλαντιαῖος, πηχυαῖος, ὀργυιαῖος, εἰκοσταῖος, τριακοσταῖος, πολλοσταῖος in Eubulus: ‘and indeed I run home at a πολλοσταῖος pace, woman.’ ἀγυιαῖος: Sophocles in Hermione: ‘but, O ground of the street of my fathers’ land.’ Δωδωναῖος. Hecataeus in Europa: ‘the Dodonaeans dwell south of the Molossians’; and Cratinus in Archilochi: ‘like a Dodonaean dog, a clod-cutter, a nurse, resembling a crane.’ And Homer: ‘Zeus, lord Δωδωναῖε’ (Il. Π 233). But Zenodotus writes Φηγωναῖε, since at Dodona an oak first gave oracles; and Suidas too says that there is a sanctuary of Zeus Φηγωναῖος in Thessaly and that he is invoked by this name. Others write ‘Βωδωναῖε’, for there is said to be a city Βωδώνη where he is honored. But Apollodorus in book 1 On the Gods etymologizes Δωδωναῖος thus: ‘just as those who call Zeus Δωδωναῖος because he gives us good things, and Πελασγικός because he is near the earth.’
