This, which ought to be accented with a grave through the addition of the ‘α’, having become from a disyllable. Words in -ρος, with more than two syllables and with ‘ου’ in the penult, are accented on the antepenult: ἐπίκουρος, ἐπάρουρος ‘the gardener’. Ἕλουρος, a Scythian tribe; μελάνουρος; Παλίνουρος; παλίουρος ‘the plant’. Ὄλουρος, a small town of Achaea not far from Pallene, as Xenophon in the seventh book of the Hellenica ( 4, 17). Βάλβουρος, from which Βάλβουρα, a city of Lycia. Βόλουρος, a city of the Tralleis in Illyria: “for a portion of the Illyrians is Βῆγις and Βόλουρος.” Ἰψίκουρος, a Ligystic tribe. Theopompus in the forty-third book: “which formerly the Ἰψίκουροι and Ἀρβαξανοί and Εὔβιοι held, Ligurians by race.” Κυνόσουρος, the son of Hermes; Κύνουρος, son of Perseus; Ἀπάτουρος, a gulf in Asia. Hecataeus. Τόμουρος. Thus some [write] Τόμαρον, a mountain of Dodona, which is also [called] Τμάρος, and [so too] the inhabitant. Note has been made of νομηουρός, “the one who guards the pasture,” and ὑλοκουρός, “the one who cuts the wood.” Trisyllables in -ρος with ‘ου’ in the penult are accented on the ultima, if they have the initial syllable long: οἰκουρός, κηπουρός, τηλουρός “one who is far away.” But trisyllables with circumflex on the penult are seen to have, before the ‘ου’, two consonants or even more, of the characteristic consonants of the second conjugation of the barytones: ἀρκτοῦρος, ἀγχοῦρος, κλαγγοῦρος “the croaker.” But Λάμπουρος is accented on the antepenult, and so is κέρκουρος, a kind of ship. Disyllables in -ρος beginning with a consonant cluster are accented on the ultima when they begin with νε-: νεκρός, νεβρός, νεφρός. Disyllables in -ρος with a cluster of β, simple and of one gender, are accented with a grave: Ἄβρος, a tribe by the Adriatic, of the Taulantii, near the Chelidonii, as Hecataeus [says]. Ἕβρος, a river of Thrace. Κίμβρος, whom some say are the Cimmerians; Σκύβρος, a Macedonian place, as Theopompus [says]. Σκόμβρος, a tribe, as Sophocles [says]. Θίβρος, a city of Caria. Lycophron (v. 1390): “who shall dwell in Θίβρος and Mount Σάτνιον.” Θύμβρος, a friend of Dardanus, from whom Θύμβρα. Ἴμβρος, an island of Thrace, sacred to the Cabeiri and Hermes, which the Carians call Ἴμβραμος; there is also a city. Τέμβρος, a city of Cyprus. Ὄμβρος, a river of Italy and a people; they are also called Ὄμβρικοι and Οὖμβροι among the Italian writers; and ὄμβρος is also an appellative. In general, disyllables in -ος, of one gender, beginning with ο- and having two consonants or more, tend to be accented with a grave—for example ὄκνος, ὄρρος, ὄσσος, Ὄρθος, ὄγμος; so too ὄμβρος. But γαμβρός is accented on the ultima.
