Discussion of accentuation in Greek compound words, with Homeric examples (proparoxytone, oxytone, anabibazein), formation with suffixes like -κλυτός, -ἰατρός, effects of diphthongs on accent.
The parasynthēta both preserve and raise the accent: ἐκλεκτός from ἐκλέγω, ἐπίλεκτος from ἐπί and λεκτός. ἀνεκτός is accented on the acute: “ἦ δὴ λοίγια ἔργα τάδ´ ἔσσεται οὐκέτ´ ἀνεκτά” (Il. Α 573). διαμετρητός is a parasynthēton; for the verb is compounded in “χῶρον μὲν πρῶτον διεμέτρεον” (Γ 315). Therefore “διαμετρητῷ” (Il. Γ 344) is correct. Aristarchus accents it with a circumflex, and the others too; and thus the tradition has it. So too ἐπαινετός is accented on the acute, because it has arisen from a compound verb, whereas ἐξαίρετος is accented on the grave. But “ἄφαρ δ´ ἀνάπυστα θεοὶ θέσαν ἀνθρώποισι” (Od. λ 274) is accented proparoxytone, since ἀνά is superfluous, in place of πυστά, ‘heard’, ‘audible’.—But ἰατρός raises the accent in φιλίατρος, and in ἀρχιατρός and ἱππιατρός it preserves it. And κλειτός and κλυτός, if they are compounded with an indeclinable element of more than one syllable, preserve the acute pitch, e.g. κλειτός, ἀγακλειτός; κλυτός, περικλυτός, ἀγακλυτός. But if with a case-form or with a monosyllabic indeclinable, it is accented proparoxytone: πρόκλυτος, “πρόκλυτ´ ἀκούοντες ἔπεα θνητῶν ἀνθρώπων” (Υ 204), ὀνομάκλυτος, τοξόκλυτος, Ἡράκλειτος. Therefore we mark ναυσικλυτός as accented on the acute. For that it is a compound is clear from the fact that the ‘α’ of the dative ναυσί remains. For separately in the poet it is said either with ‘η’ or with ‘ε’, but in composition with ‘α’: Ναυσικάα, Ναυσίθοος. But δουρὶ κλυτός is in juxtaposition; for if it were in composition, it would have been accented proparoxytone, as compounded with a case-form and having raised the accent. The formations from ἀείδω, if they have the diphthong ‘ῳ’ in the penult, are accented on the acute: τραγῳδός, κωμῳδός, μελῳδός; but if the diphthong ‘οι’, then if they are more than four syllables, they are accented proparoxytone: λιγυάοιδος, ὑπεράοιδος; but if four, likewise: ὑμνάοιδος, ἐπάοιδος, λυράοιδος. But the derivatives from these are accented on the acute: ὑμνῳδός, ἐπῳδός, λυρῳδός. Whatever are compounded from a genitive in -ος are accented proparoxytone, except those of…
