The polysyllabic simple words in -ους, when they are simple, take the circumflex: ἁπλοῦς, διπλοῦς, τριπλοῦς, πλακοῦς. Σχοινοῦς is a place in Arcadia. Since the locality is marshy, it has taken its appellation from the rushes in it; for this type is common among the Greeks, from plants that abound in places, as for example Σκιλλοῦς, a city of Triphylia; Τρεμιθοῦς, a village of Cyprus, from the terebinths growing around the place, which the Cypriots call τρεμίθους. Others say that, when Aphrodite landed in the place, because of the presence of the goddess she was shaken by trembling, and for this reason it was also called Τρεμιθοῦς.—Δαφνοῦς, a Phocian city—there is also a deme near Cos called Δαφνοῦς—Σελινοῦς, a city of Sicily, spoken of in the masculine and in the feminine—Φοινικοῦς, a city of Crete; there is also an island off Lycia; there is also a harbor Φοινικοῦς. Thucydides in the eighth book (c. 34). Φυκοῦς, a city of Libya; and Φυκοῦς lies by Taenarum of the Peloponnese. Θριοῦς, formerly a city of Achaea, but now of Elis, bordering on Patrae. Others derive it from Θριοῦς the Athenian, whom Theseus sent with an army to come as an ally to Heracles. Μυρικοῦς, a city opposite Tenedos and Lesbos, in the Troad. Hecataeus: “to Μυρικόεντα of the Troad.” Οἰνοῦς, a small town of Laconia, as Androtion and Didymus say; Πυξοῦς, a city of Sicily; Ῥιζοῦς, a city of Thessaly; Ἀνθεμοῦς, a city of Macedonia and of Syria; others derive it from Ἀνθέμος. Likewise Πιτυώδης, Ἐρικώδης; Κυπάρισσος, a city on Parnassus, which some also say is Κυπαρισσοῦντα; Θρύον; Ἐλαία. And some of the Athenian demes are named from the plants that grow in them: Ῥαμνοῦς, a deme of the Aiantis tribe; Φηγοῦς, a deme of the Erechtheis tribe; Μυρρινοῦς, a deme of the Pandionis tribe. Dionysius, the son of Tryphon, says Μυρινοῦττα. Μαραθοῦς and Μαραθών; Ἀγνοῦς, a deme of the Demetrias tribe—some say of the Acamantis—named from the ἄγνος that grows in it. Ἀναγυροῦς, a deme of the Erechtheis tribe; Ἀχερδοῦς, a deme of the Hippothoontis tribe, and Ἀχραδοῦς in Aristophanes. Ἐλαιοῦς, a deme of the Hippothoontis tribe, as Diodorus says; but Dionysius has Ἐλαιεύς. There is also Ἐλαιοῦς, a city in the Hellespont; there is also Ἄργους Ἐλαιοῦς. Further, there is also Ἁλιμοῦς, a deme of the Leontis tribe; but Callimachus considers it a city. Ἀμαθοῦς, a most ancient city of Cyprus; it was named either from Ἀμαθοῦς, son of Heracles, or from Ἀμαθούση, the mother of Cinyras. Ψαμαθοῦς, a Laconian city; Artemidorus in the second book of his Geography: “for after Taenarum a city comes next, Ψαμαθοῦς.” Ὀποῦς, a city of the Locrians of the …
