Χέρρουρα, a city of Libya, as Alexander says in the third book of his Libyan Matters: “there lies a peninsula named Χέρρουρα.” Κύνουρα, a city of Argos, from Cinurus, son of Perseus. Pausanias in the third book (c. 2, 2). Λυκόσουρα, a city of Arcadia on Mount Lycaeum. Ῥινοκόρουρα, a city of Egypt, “so called from the people who were settled there in old times, whose noses had been cut off.” Βαλβέρουρα: thus some say an Indian city of Iberia is called; among them also δίφουρα, “the bridge.”
The simple words ending in -ρα with a consonant cluster are accented on the penult and have long α: ὕδρα; there is also an island of Libya near Carthage, as Ephorus in the fifth book. πέτρα; there is also a city of Palestine. λέπρα; ῥήτρα, “the agreement”: “but now let us make an agreement” (ξ 393). φαρέτρα, γάστρα, μήτρα, φρήτρα, φράτρα and φάτρα; μίτρα, “the belt”: Homer, “and the μίτρα which he used to wear” (Δ 137); λίτρα, χύτρα, αἴθρα, ξύστρα, μύστρα, ποτίστρα, κολυμβήθρα, Ἠλέκτρα, καλύπτρα, χαράδρα; there is also a city of Phocis not far from Lilaea. Ἄρρα, a city of Illyria. Ἄτραι, a city between the Euphrates and the Pigrētus. Arrian in the seventeenth book of the Parthica. Ἔγρα, a city of Arabia by the Ailanitic gulf. Θύμβρα, a city of the Troad, a foundation of Dardanus, from Θύμβρος his friend. Γάγγρα, a city of Paphlagonia. Alexander in his work On Paphlagonia: “Nicostratus says that a goatherd was pasturing goats around those places. Seeing one that had strayed off, the goatherd, at a loss because at home he found them lacking but on the pasture full, reported it to his master. And he told him to watch the one that had strayed. So, watching, he saw it climbing up onto a certain high hill and going toward a certain inaccessible rock, and from below he heard the bleating of kids: there it had happened that the goat had given birth. Seeing, then, a suitable place, he founded a city and named it Γάγγρα, because that was the goat’s name.” Eratosthenes, however, says it in the neuter: τὰ Γάγγρα. There is also Γάγγρα of Arabia Felix. Γάδρα, a city of Palestine. Πάτρα, one of the three kinds of community among the Greeks, as Dicaearchus says.
