Ioniae. Herodotus in the first book (c. 142). It is also said Φωκαίη with η. It was so named because many seals followed those who founded it. There is also another city of Caria on Mycalê. Αἴθαια, a city of Laconia, one of the hundred; Philochorus in the third book of the Atthis. Σήταια, from which comes the place Σηταῖον near Sybaris. And she was one of the captives, who, after persuading the others of the Greeks to burn the ships, they themselves crucified. Ἄστραια, a city of Illyria. Arrian in the first book of the Alexandriaca: «οἳ δ´ ἔχον Ἄστραιάν τε Δόβηρά τε». Ἀμφίκαια, a city of Phocis. Pausanias in the tenth book (23, 9). The same author also said Ἀμφίκλεια. Ἀστυπάλαια, one of the Cyclades. It was called Πύρρα when the Carians held it, then Πύλαια, then Θεῶν τράπεζα because of its flowering. It was named from Ἀστυπαλαία, the mother of Ancaius. A second city is in Cos; a third is an island having a city between Rhodes and Crete; a fourth city is in Samos; a fifth is a headland near Attica. Πλάταια, a city of Boeotia. Homer in the singular: «οἵ τε Πλάταιαν ἔχον» (Β 504). But Eudoxus in the fifth book of the Circuit of the Earth has the plural Πλαταιάς … because it has tombs and trophies of brave men, who freed Greece and enslaved the royal army. It is called from πλάτη, just as Κῶπαι is from κώπη, as Apollodorus says in the first book of the Catalogue: «when Boeotia had become a lake, those dwelling around the lakes, the Boeotians, used to travel to one another by boat; whence the cities were named from the oar-blade and the oar». But the original singular must be accented with the antepenult, Πλάταιαν, like Λίλαιαν, Ἱστίαιαν, Δίκαιαν. If, however, it changes number, it also changes accent. Monogender words in -α with contracted α, having more than two syllables and with the diphthong ει in the penult, are accented on the antepenult: εὐλάβεια, ἀλήθεια, εὐγένεια, ἐπιφάνεια, ἀπέχθεια, ἀσφάλεια, ἀδράνεια, ἀμέλεια, ἀκρίβεια, εὐέπεια, εὔκλεια, ἄδεια, ἔνδεια—by crasis from εὐκλέεια, ἀδέεια, ἐνδέεια—ἀπώλεια, ἐξώλεια, προώλεια, ἐνέργεια, ὠφέλεια, Θάλεια, Μήδεια, βοήθεια, εὐέρεια, ἐντερόνεια, πέλεια, Μάλεια, a headland by the Peloponnese, and Μαλέα. Ἀμάλθεια: and it is the goat that reared Zeus. ὑπώρεια. Ἀλεξάνδρεια.
