In the second book. It was so called from the fact that the unmarried Hesione was handed over by her father to the sea-monster. It is also said Ἀγάμμη, just as πρέσβεια becomes πρέσβη and τὸ βασίλεια becomes βασίλη by synaloepha. And Ἀγάμμεια can also be formed from Ἀγάμμη, just as Πηνελόπεια from Πηνελόπη. Ἐρύθεια, an island of Geryon in the Ocean, is named from Ἐρυθεία, daughter of Geryon. It is also called Ἐρύθη by synaloepha. Likewise Ζέλεια, a city of the Troad, is called Ζέλη. Homer: “and they dwelt in Ζέλεια” (Β 824). In Poseidippus it is found with iota, Ζελίη. And Μαντίνεια, a city of Arcadia, (is called) Μαντίνη. Homer: “who held Tegea and lovely Μαντινέην” (Β 607). Ψυττάλεια, an island near Salamis. Herodotus (8, 76): “to the little island Ψυττάλεια, lying between Salamis and the mainland.” It is also called Ψυττάλη. But Ψυττάλεια seems to be the original form, and it is named from Ψυττάλος. Ἀγάθεια, a city of Phocis, as Hellanicus (says) in the first book of the Deucalioneia. There is also Ἀγάθεια, a city of the Ligyes or Celts, a derivative of Ἀγάθη, like Βερενίκεια and Θεσσαλονίκεια. Ἰόπεια, a city of Phoenicia, which is also Ἰόπη. It is also called Ἰοπία with iota, and perhaps (this is) from Αἰθιοπία. Λαοδίκεια, a city of Syria, formerly called Λευκὴ ἀκτή, and before that Ῥάμιθα, as Philo (says). There is also another in Lydia; and there is also another in Lycaonia; and another in Media. It is said to be formed by derivation from Λαοδίκη, just as Ἀπάμη (gives) Ἀπάμεια: a city of Syria named from Apama, mother of Seleucus. There is also another in the land of the Messenians, “enclosed by the Pigris, where the river Pigris splits, and on the right side a river Sella goes round, and on the left the Pigris, homonymous with the great (river).” There is also one of Lesser Phrygia, which was called Κελαιναί. There is also one of Bithynia, a foundation of Nicomedes Epiphanes, but it was first called Μύρλεια. There is also one of Persis, near Edessa to the north. Εὐρώπη, Εὐρώπεια. Σκάρφεια, a city of Locris near Thermopylae. It is named from Σκαρφεία. Strabo also calls the same place Σκάρφην. Γεράνεια, a city of Phrygia, from the original form Γεράνη. There is also a mountain between Megara and Corinth, from which Ino leapt as she fled Athamas. Αἰθάλεια, an island of the Tyrrhenians. Philistus in the fifth book of the Sicelica: it is called Αἰθάλη. Hecataeus in the Europa. Polybius in the thirty-fourth book says that Lemnos is called Αἰθάλεια. And the city was so called perhaps from the furnaces of Hephaestus that send up smoke. Γοργίππεια, a city of Sindice. It is also called Γοργίππη. Αἰγώνεια, a city of the Melieis. Lycophron (v. 903): “of whom some, wretched, (have) Αἰγώνειαν as their fatherland.” And Hecataeus (too). Rhianus in the sixteenth (book) calls it itself Αἰγώνη. Κωρύκεια: thus some speak of Κώρυκος, a city of Cilicia. Λυκόζεια, a city of the Thracians, which is also Λύκοζος. Τηλάνδρεια, a city of Caria, which is also Τήλανδρος. Φανότεια, a city of Phocis.
