Words ending in -κη, of more than two syllables, with the iota in the penult contracted, are accented on the penult: Ἑλίκη, a city of the Peloponnese. Homer: “and those for you to Ἑλίκη and Aἰγαί” (Il. Θ 203), [named] either from Ἑλίκας son of Λυκάων, or from Ἑλίκη, wife of Ἴων, but daughter of Σελινοῦς, son of Ποσειδῶν. There is also another [Ἑλίκη] in Thessaly. μυρίκη. There is also an island in the Red Sea, and Ἀμφίπολις too, a city, is so called. Βαιτίκη, a region; and in this way Τουρδητανία is named from the river Βαῖτις. μηδίκη. Strabo: “and the plant that especially nourishes the horses, which we call μηδίκη.” Βελγίκη, the region. Βερενίκη: six cities—first, in Epirus, the one founded by Pyrrhus the younger; second … the one [founded] by Ptolemy Philadelphus; third, in the Troglodytic [country]; fourth, the one formerly [called] Chios; fifth, in Cilicia; sixth, in Libya, the one formerly Hesperis, and it was called Βερενίκη from Berenice, wife of Ptolemy.
