A city of Paphlagonia, in which the ancient Phineus dwelt. Didymus, however, says that it is an island. Κάδρεμα, a city of Lycia, a colony of the Olbians; and the city is interpreted as “roasting of grain.” Βήθλεμα, a city of Palestine near Jerusalem. Josephus says “from Βηθλεεμῶν” (A. i. 5, 11). Ἄριμα, a mountain. Homer: “in Ἀρίμοις, where they say are the couchings of Typhoeus” (Β 783). Some say that the myth arose in Cilicia, others in Syria, others in Πιθηκοῦσαι among the Tyrrhenians. Σίκιμα, a city of Arabia, which is also Σίκιμος. Ἔριμον, a city of the Oenotrians inland, as Hecataeus says. Ὑλλάριμα, a small town of Caria above Stratonicea. Γόραμα, a district of the Tent-dwelling Arabs. Σόδομα was the metropolis of the ten cities that were destroyed at the Asphaltite lake. Σίδυμα, a city of Lycia, which Alexander mentions in the first book of the Lyciaca; and it was named from Σίδυμος. Λώρυμα, a city of Caria—Hecataeus in the Asia; and there is also a harbor of Rhodes which is called Λώρυμα. Ἱεροσόλυμα, the metropolis of Judaea, which was called Σόλυμα from the mountains of the Solymi. Δίδυμα, a place and oracle of Miletus dedicated to Zeus and Apollo. There are also rivers of Crete; there are also of Thessaly; there are also two little islands near Syros, as Artemidorus says; there are also mountains near Laodicea. Δίνδυμα, mountains of the Troad, from which comes Δινδυμήνη, Rhea. Ἴδυμα, a city of Caria; it is also called Ἰδύμη. Βούνειμα, a city of Epirus, a foundation of Odysseus, which he founded near Trampyas, having received an oracle to go to men “who do not know the sea”; therefore, after sacrificing an ox, he founded it.
The proper names ending in -νον, being more than disyllabic, are accented with the antepenult: Ἀβάκαινον, a Sicilian city; the penult is by a diphthong. Τρικάρανον, a fort of Phliasia—Theopompus in the fifty-fifth book. Λίβανα, a city of Syria neighboring the Atrai—Arrian in the ninth book of the Parthica. Κοσίανα, a fort of Palestine on the coast of Syria—Charax in the tenth book. Ἵπανα, a city near Carthage, as Polybius in the first book. Ἀγβάτανα, a small town of Syria—Herodotus in the third (c. 62 et 64). Demetrius says that Ἀγβάτανα is twofold, one in Media and one in Syria. Ctesias everywhere in the Persica writes the Ἀγβάτανα among the Medes with alpha; but among the ancients the Persian one is with epsilon; and in Charax this one too is with epsilon, which they also say was called Ἐπιφάνεια. The spelling with kappa is better; but I reject the one with gamma, because perhaps there is a risk that beta has been subordinated to gamma, as it has been subordinated in the phrase λαγβατα ὅρκια.
