1.411
Discussion of accentuation patterns for feminine nouns ending in -ας and -ης, and rules for the singular dative accent; examples (e.g., Φοβερά, Ἀθηνᾶ, Μήδεια) and dative forms (μηνί, φωτί).
Feminine genitives in -ας and -ης, when derived from acute-nominated and circumflex-nominated nominatives, take the circumflex: ἡ φοβερά, τῆς φοβερᾶς; ἡ καλή, τῆς καλῆς; and likewise Ἀθηνᾶ, Ἀθηνᾶς, and χρυσῆ, χρυσῆς. But those derived from barytone forms have the accent on the penult: Μήδεια, Μηδείας; ὁσία, ὁσίας. The circumflexed μιᾶς, derived from the barytone μία, some attribute to Ionic usage, and likewise ἰᾶς from ἴα. Similarly also the datives. {1On the accent of the singular dative.}1 Every disyllabic dative ending in pronounced -ι, both singular and plural, is accented with an acute: μηνί, μησί; φωτί, φωσί. Again, in the case of contracted genitives, the datives for the same reason take the grave: ἦρι, κῆρι; and further, from contraction are Θέτιι, Θέτι—“πάντα Θέτι καλλιπλοκάμῳ (Σ 407)”; μαστίι, μαστί—“μάστι αἰὲν ἔλαυνε” (Ψ 500).
