{ON NAMES ENDING IN 'αξ' AND IN 'ρ' AND IN 'ας'. BOOK 2.} 1 Every noun ending in 'αξ' and having more than one syllable is barytone, unless it has been compounded from a verb and preserves one syllable of the verb and is adjectival, not ethnic: κόραξ; there is also Κόραξ, a mountain between Καλλίπολις and Ναύπακτος. Polybius, in the twentieth book: κόλαξ, φύλαξ, ἄναξ, βόαξ, νέαξ, φέναξ, κόρδαξ, ἅρπαξ, κέκραξ, λάλαξ, λάταξ, χάραξ; there is also Χάραξ, a place of Alexander near Celaenae of Phrygia, where Alexander son of Philip encamped. There is also in Caria another city, Χάραξ, now Tralles. There is also another Χάραξ, a very great emporium, in the gulf of Nicomedia near it. There is also another place in Pontus. Ἄταξ, a river; Μίμαξ, a Libyan tribe. Philistus, in the eighth book of the Sicilian History. Μύλαξ, an Epirote tribe. Lycophron (v. 1021): “And Crathis, neighbor and mountain of the Μυλάκες.” Νύραξ, a Celtic city. Hecataeus, in the Europe. Ῥύνδαξ, a river between Phrygia and the Hellespont, also called Ῥύνδακος. There is also found Τεκτοσάγης in the singular and Τεκτοσάγαι in the plural; for as Καππάδοκος has the genitive Καππαδόκης, so Τεκτόσαγος has the genitive Τεκτοσάγης. ὀρθίαξ, θυμέλαξ, Ἀχαρνοφαίαξ, λινοθώραξ, Σαμόθρᾳξ, Ἱππῶναξ, Ἀρχεάναξ, χαρτοφύλαξ, φιλάρπαξ, ἐριβῶλαξ, πολυπῖδαξ.
