{The orthotonic ones.} 1 Ἀνά, when pronounced with its own accent, takes its proper case, the accusative: »ἀνὰ στρατόν« (Α 10). But among the Attic and Ionic writers it is used with the dative: »χρυσέῳ ἀνὰ σκήπτρῳ« (Α 15), in place of σύν. {And the enclitic and anastrophic ones are these.} 1 Κατά, when enclitic and anastrophic, takes the genitive and the accusative. Μετά, when enclitic and anastrophic, takes the genitive, dative, and accusative; but »μετά σφισιν« is used in place of ἐν. Παρά, when enclitic and anastrophic, takes the genitive, dative, and accusative. Περί, when enclitic and anastrophic, takes the genitive, dative, and accusative. Ἐπί, when enclitic and anastrophic, is construed with the genitive, and with the dative and the accusative. Ὑπό, when enclitic and anastrophic, takes the genitive, dative, and accusative. * Whenever a preposition has its construction with what follows, it keeps its own accent, inasmuch as it indeed holds its position: »νήπιοι, οἳ κατὰ βοῦς Ὑπερίονος Ἠελίοιο—ἤσθιον (α 8). But if they fall between a noun and a verb or participle, with a different meaning they either undergo anastrophe or not, as for example «Ἰθάκην κατακοιρανέουσιν»
