Discusses accentuation of ὥς and ὧς (perispomenon, oxytone) in different positions (initial, middle, final), enclitic behavior, and Homeric examples.
ἂν βασιλῆας« (Β 250). τὸ ὥς ἀεὶ ὀξύνεται, κἂν ἐν ἀρχῇ κἂν ἐν μέσῳ κἂν ἐν τέλει ᾖ, πλὴν μόνον ὅτε σημαίνει τὸ οὕτως, ὁπότε γε ὑποτάσσοιτο συνδέσμῳ, ὡς Ἀρίσταρχος καὶ Τυραννίων, ἢ ὡς ἐγὼ ἡγοῦμαι τὸ ὅμως. τότε γὰρ περισπᾶται. ὀξύνεται μὲν ἐν ἀρχῇ οὕτως »ὣς δὲ λέων ἐχάρη (Γ 23) κοιμιζομένης ἐν τούτῳ τῆς ὀξείας διὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι τὸ δέ ἐγκλιτικόν. καὶ ἐν μέσῳ «ὣς ἀεὶ τὸν ὁμοῖον ἄγει ὣς τὸν ὁμοῖον» (ρ 218) «τὼς δέ ς´ ἀπεχθήρω, ὣς νῦν ἔκπαγλα φίλησα» (Γ 415) καὶ ἐν τέλει «Τρῶες μὲν κλαγγῇ τ´ ἐνοπῇ τ´ ἴσαν ὄρνιθες ὥς» (Γ 2). τοῦ δὲ περισπωμένου, ὅτε δηλοῖ τὸ ὅμως «ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἐθέλω δόμεναι πάλιν, εἰ τόγ´ ἄμεινον» (Α 116) «ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἱππεῦσι μετέπρεπον ἡμετέροισιν—καὶ πεζός περ ἐών, ἐπεὶ ὣς ἄγε νεῖκος Ἀθήνη» (Λ 720 et 721), τὸ μὲν πρότερον ὧς περισπωμένως, τὸ δὲ ἕτερον κατ´ ἔγκλισιν, ἐπειδήπερ τὸ μεταφραστικὸν αὐτοῦ ἐστιν, ἐπεὶ οὕτως ἦγε τὸ νεῖκος Ἀθήνη. «ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἱππεῦσι μετέσσομαι» (Δ 322) «ἐμὲ δ´ οὐδ´ ὧς θυμὸς ἀνῆκεν».
“ἂν βασιλῆας” (Β 250). ὥς is always accented with an acute, whether it stands at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end, except only when it means οὕτως, whenever it is subordinated to a conjunction, as Aristarchus and Tyrannion hold, or, as I think, when it means ὅμως; for then it is circumflexed. It is accented with an acute at the beginning thus: “ὣς δὲ λέων ἐχάρη” (Γ 23), the acute being kept in this case because δέ is not enclitic. And in the middle: “ὣς ἀεὶ τὸν ὁμοῖον ἄγει ὣς τὸν ὁμοῖον” (ρ 218); “τὼς δέ ς´ ἀπεχθήρω, ὣς νῦν ἔκπαγλα φίλησα” (Γ 415). And at the end: “Τρῶες μὲν κλαγγῇ τ´ ἐνοπῇ τ´ ἴσαν ὄρνιθες ὥς” (Γ 2). But in the circumflexed form, when it signifies ὅμως: “ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἐθέλω δόμεναι πάλιν, εἰ τόγ´ ἄμεινον” (Α 116); “ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἱππεῦσι μετέπρεπον ἡμετέροισιν—καὶ πεζός περ ἐών, ἐπεὶ ὣς ἄγε νεῖκος Ἀθήνη” (Λ 720 et 721): the former ὧς with circumflex, the other by enclisis, since its force is explanatory—‘since in this way Athena was leading the strife.’ “ἀλλὰ καὶ ὧς ἱππεῦσι μετέσσομαι” (Δ 322). “ἐμὲ δ´ οὐδ´ ὧς θυμὸς ἀνῆκεν”.
