For poets, because of metre; but these forms arose because of metre. For it is possible to find them often lengthened; Θρήϊκος, however, shortens the ι, having a variation. For it is also said, by synaloepha, Θρῃκός. ἧλιξ, on the other hand, has gone along with those that have λ before ι: χόλικος, ἕλικος, χάλικος, κύλικος. σύμμιγος is a compound. Monosyllables in -υξ shorten the υ: τρύξ, Φρύξ, πτύξ, Στύξ. The quantity is the same also in the genitive. Disyllables in -υξ likewise shorten the υ, but they keep the υ shortened whenever the genitive has χ or γ: στόνυχος, ὄνυχος, ὄρτυγος, ἤλυγος, δίζυγος, φάρυγος; but κόκκυγος they both shorten and lengthen. If, however, the inflection is through κ, in some cases it keeps the υ shortened, and in some it lengthens it: for Ἔρυκος is with a shortened υ, and ἄμβυκος, Βέβρυκος, κάλυκος, Γάνυκος, ἴβυκος, but with a lengthened υ βόμβυκος, αἴθυκος, κήρυκος. They say that «κήρυκι Ἠπυτίδῃ» (Ρ 324) has shortening because of metre. Forms in -υξ of more than two syllables, whether compounds or even simple words, have the quantity evident. Forms in -αψ of more than one syllable, we say, shorten the α: λαῖλαψ. But among monosyllables δράψ is lengthened, as found in Aristophanes; and λάψ among the Tarentines. But γράψ and φάψ, ending in the feminine gender, are shortened. Monosyllables in -ιψ are lengthened, likewise also in the genitive; therefore the genitive λιβός is exceptional. But those of more than one syllable are shortened. They wish, however, to lengthen πεδότριψ, being misled by Archilochus’ «ἄνδρας ἀμφιτρίβας». Forms in -ας with circumflex necessarily have the α long: ἀλλᾶς, Ἡρᾶς, Βορρᾶς, πελεκᾶς. Masculines in -ας with barytone accent, whether nouns or participles, are lengthened: Αἴας, Θόας, Δρύας, Αἰνείας, λέξας, γράψας, ποιήσας. Noted as exceptional are the adjective μέγας and «λᾶας ἀναιδής» (λ 598). «δουρὶ δὲ ξυστῷ μέμηνεν Αἶας» (Alcmanis) and such things are according to dialect, «δῆσας ἀλυκτοπέδῃσι» (Theogn. 521). Forms in -ας with oxytone accent, if they are nouns, are shortened, but if participles, are lengthened: Ἀρκάς, φυγάς, ἐθάς, πολυδειράς, κιχράς, ἱστάς, πιμπράς, βιβάς. Noted as exceptional are ἱμάς and ἀνδριάς and those derived from κέκραμαι: ἰσοκράς, ἁλικράς. Forms in -ις, whether pure or not, barytone, whether masculine or feminine, shorten the ι: ὄϊς, πάϊς, ἔρις, Θέτις, μῆνις, Πάρις, ἔχις.
