Τυραννίων δὲ τρισυλλάβως, λέγων ὡς ὅτι οὐδὲν πατρωνυμικὸν παρὰ τῷ ποιητῇ ἔχει πρὸ τέλους διεσταλμένον τὸ 'ι' ἀπὸ ἑτέρου φωνήεντος οἷον Πυθοίδης, Βοηθοίδης, Πηλείδης. οὐκ ἄρα τοῦτο. ὑπὲρ δὲ τοῦ τετρασυλλάβως ἀναγινώσκειν ἔχομεν ἐκεῖνο λέγειν, ὡς ὅτι ἐντελές ἐστι τὸ κατὰ διάλυσιν τοῦ 'ι', καὶ ὅτι οὐκ ἔχομεν τοιοῦτό τι πατρωνυμικόν, ὃ κατὰ σύλληψιν ἐξηνέχθη τοῦ 'α' καὶ τοῦ 'ι' πρὸ τέλους. παρὰ τὸ Πείραιος οὖν Πειραΐδης ἐγένετο. ὠγενίδης ὁ ἀρχαῖος ἀπὸ Ὠγένου ἀρχαίου θεοῦ. Καὶ τὰ μητρωνυμικὰ δὲ διὰ τοῦ 'ι' γράφεται, Λητοΐδης, Δαναΐδης, Νιοβίδης, ὅθεν τὸ Φιλομηλείδης κύριον λέγεται εἶναι· εἰ γὰρ ἦν μητρωνυμικόν, διὰ τοῦ 'ι' ἐγράφετο ἄν· ἀλλ´ οὐδὲ Ὅμηρος ἀπὸ μητέρων σχηματίζει πατρωνυμικόν, ὥς φησι Διονύσιος. Ἔτι τὰ διὰ τοῦ 'ωδης' βαρύνονται, εὐώδης, πετρώδης, δυσώδης, γεώδης, ὀνώδης, βοώδης, λιμώδης, κτηνώδης, πυρώδης, ἀμμώδης, γραώδης, σαρκώδης. * Τὰ εἰς 'κης' κύρια βαρύνονται· Ἀρτάκης ὁ κατοικῶν Ἀρτάκην πόλιν Φρυγίας. Σοφοκλῆς δὲ ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἀρτακεύς εἶπε »τί μέλλει Ἀρτακῆς τε καὶ Περκώσιοι«· ἔστι δὲ καὶ κύριον Ἀρτάκης »ἠδὲ καὶ Ἀρτάκεα, πρόμον ἀνδρῶν« (Apoll. Rhod. I 1047). Ἀριαράκης ἔθνος παρὰ τὴν Ἀριαράκην, πόλιν πρὸς τῇ Κασπίᾳ θαλάσσῃ ὡς λέσχη λέσχης, ἀράχνη ἀράχνης. Ὑδάρκης ἔθνος Ἰνδικόν. Ἀπασιάκης Μασσαγετῶν ἔθνος. Στράβων ἑνδεκάτῃ καὶ Πολύβιος δεκάτῃ (c. 48) »οἱ δ´ Ἀπασιάκαι νομάδες κατοικοῦσι μὲν ἀνὰ μέσον Ὤξου καὶ Τανάϊδος«.
Of the daughter of Maga, and wife of Ptolemy, there is a deme of the Ptolemais tribe; and other names too have been produced in patronymic fashion: Δαιδαλίδαι, a deme of the Cecropis tribe; Εἰρεσίδαι of the Acamantis; Εὐπυρίδαι of the Leontis; Ἐχελίδαι, a deme of Attica; Ἰωνίδαι, a deme of the Aigeis tribe; Κυνδατίδαι of the same; Κοθωτίδαι; Περρίδαι, a deme of the Antiochis tribe; Σημαχίδαι, a deme of Attica, from Σημάχος—though it belongs to the Antiochis tribe; but Philochorus in the Ἐπακρία says the deme is so. Σκαμβωνίδαι, a deme of Attica of the Antiochis tribe; Συβρίδαι, a deme of the Erechtheis tribe; Βωταχίδαι, a place in Arcadia from Βωτάχος. Φιλαΐδαι, a deme of the Aigeis tribe, from Φιλαῖος, son of Ajax and Lysidice, daughter of Coronus the Lapith, just as Πειραΐδης is “Πειραΐδαο” (Δ 228); for the others pronounce this in four syllables. But Tyrannion in three syllables, saying that no patronymic in the poet has the ι separated before the end from another vowel, as in Πυθοίδης, Βοηθοίδης, Πηλείδης. Therefore this is not so. But in support of reading it in four syllables we can say this: that the form with resolution of the ι is complete, and that we have no such patronymic in which α and ι before the end are pronounced in synizesis. From Πείραιος, then, Πειραΐδης came to be. ὠγενίδης, the ancient one, from Ὠγένος, an ancient god. And the metronymics too are written with ι: Λητοΐδης, Δαναΐδης, Νιοβίδης; whence Φιλομηλείδης is said to be a proper name; for if it were a metronymic, it would be written with ι; but Homer does not form a patronymic from mothers, as Dionysius says. Further, those in -ωδης are barytone: εὐώδης, πετρώδης, δυσώδης, γεώδης, ὀνώδης, βοώδης, λιμώδης, κτηνώδης, πυρώδης, ἀμμώδης, γραώδης, σαρκώδης. Proper names in -κης are barytone: Ἀρτάκης, the inhabitant of Ἀρτάκη, a city of Phrygia. Sophocles, from Ἀρτακεύς, said: “τί μέλλει Ἀρτακῆς τε καὶ Περκώσιοι”; and there is also the proper name Ἀρτάκης: “ἠδὲ καὶ Ἀρτάκεα, πρόμον ἀνδρῶν” (Apoll. Rhod. I 1047). Ἀριαράκης is an ethnicon from Ἀριαράκη, a city by the Caspian Sea, as λέσχη from λέσχης, ἀράχνη from ἀράχνης. Ὑδάρκης is an Indian ethnicon. Ἀπασιάκης is an ethnicon of the Massagetae. Strabo in book 11 and Polybius in book 10 (c. 48): “οἱ δ´ Ἀπασιάκαι νομάδες κατοικοῦσι μὲν ἀνὰ μέσον Ὤξου καὶ Τανάϊδος”.
